We are delighted to welcome you to your new law school.   You may call upon us for questions regarding timetabling, exams, registration, courses, in fact any question relating to academic affairs.

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE

CML 1104 – Public Law and Legislation, CML 1103 – Criminal Law and Procedure and CML 1213 – Constitutional Law I are compulsory courses which you must take this year.  They are already listed on your Registration Form.  However, you get to indicate your preferred section for each course.  Click here to see the JD/LL.B. FIrst Year Course Descriptions, indicating the days and times all first-year courses are offered.  Please indicate the section letter you would prefer on the Registration Form.

In addition to the 1st year courses listed above, you must take a minimum of 9 credits of electives in the Fall, 3 credits of elective in January and 6 credits of electives in the Winter, for a minimum of 30 credits for the year.  You must register in a minimum of 13 credits and a maximum of 17 credits per term (the Winter Term credits will include the January Term credits).

To select your upper-year electives, please consult the Course Selection Guide available on our website www.commonlaw.uottawa.ca under Academic Affairs, Course Selection Guide and register on-line by using the Rabaska tool available on Infoweb on July 2nd (see Registration Procedures on our website).  Alternately, you can simply indicate your selection on the Registration Form.

An approved copy of your course selection will not be mailed to you.  Please check your confirmation of Registration on InfoWeb.

Note: Anyone registering after August 29 must meet with the Academic Administrator.

When selecting your upper year courses, it is extremely important to ensure there are no exam conflicts with your first year courses.

Whether or not you use Rabaska to register for your upper-year courses please sign and return the Registration Form to us by mail or by fax (613-562-5869) so we can proceed with registering you in your first-year courses as you cannot select these on-line.

Once you are registered, you will be able to print your individual timetable from the web by visiting InfoWeb.  Further information follows below on this very important and useful web site.

To be clear as to your upper-year requirements, here is a short checklist for your convenience.  These must be completed before you graduate, but can be taken this year or next:

COMPULSORY COURSES AND REQUIREMENTS

  • An upper-year course in Alternate Dispute Resolution (CML 2321) or Mediation (CML 2320) (instead of the first-year ADR course);  this course will also satisfy your Oral Advocacy requirement;
  • CML 2301 - Aboriginal Peoples and the Law (this is now replacing first-year Property Law for JD students, freeing up 3 credits for more electives);
  • CML 2309 - Civil Procedure
  • CML 2313 - Constitutional Law II
  • You must fulfil the Major Paper requirement in the context of one of your upper-year courses.  More details can be found on the school web site under “Academic Affairs”.
