Requirements and Course Descriptions of the National Program

Students must complete at least 30 credits during the academic year, with a minimum of 13 credits or a maximum of 17 credits per term. Please note that the January Term credits are included in the Winter Term credit count.


The 30 credits must include the following compulsory courses:

Mandatory Courses – total of 18 credits

Fall Term 2011 (mandatory courses - 10 credits)

CML 2709N – Procédure civile I (3 credits) (French)*
CML 4141N – Contracts (4 credits) (English)*
CML 4540N – Fondements de la common law:
Foundations of Common Law (3 credits) (English)*

Registration in a course during the January 2012 Term is mandatory

Winter Term 2012 (mandatory -  8 credits)

CML 4542N - Délits civils (4 credits) (French)* 

CML 4543N – Droit des biens (4 credits) (French)*

* Note: These courses must be taken in the language indicated.  There is no choice of section.

Optional Courses – total of 12 credits


January Term (madatory course - 3 credits)
1 optional course (minimum of 3 credits)


9 credits can be distributed between the Fall 2011 and the Winter 2012 terms
(with a minimum of 13 credits or a maximum of 17 credits per term. Please note that the January Term credits are included in the Winter Term credit count.)

Important details:

  • National Program students are not permitted to enroll in the following courses without prior approval by the Director of the program:
    • Courses that are essentially identical in content to those that the student has already completed before commencing the National Program (for example CML2313 Constitutional Law II); 
    • Competitive Moot courses except where, in the opinion of the Director of the Program, the student has evidenced that a demonstrable common law content exists; or
    • School Sponsored or Student-Proposed Internships except where, in the opinion of the Director of the Program, the student has evidenced that a demonstrable common law content exists.
  • Student must make sure that they do not have a course schedule conflict (not even an overlap of ten minutes) or an exam conflict.  Moreover, having 2 exams in one day does not constitute an exam conflict.   • Students who have taken a required course before entering the program may not repeat the course and must replace the credit hours by another course or courses.
  • Students must satisfy the Major Paper Requirement of the Common Law Section in an optional course worth at least 3 credits. Major Paper must be registered (blue form) at the Academic Affairs Office (FTX 237).  See deadlines under “Important Dates
  • You must obtain a minimum cumulative grade point average (c.g.p.a.) of 3.5 to successfully pass the year.  See Rule 19 .
