REGISTRATION DEADLINES
Please also note that the Faculty will not be sending a course package by mail and that we have published all the necessary information regarding your course selection on our website. We strongly suggest you carefully read the registration procedures very carefully prior to completing the registration form and sending it to the Academic Affairs Office.
Registration forms must be received by: Wednesday, July 13th 2011, 4pm*
We will start to process the forms randomly on : Thursday, July 14th at 9am
Registration forms received after 9:00 a.m. on July 14th will be processed in the order they are received after all other forms which were received on time.
Registration forms are processed randomly. We do our best to assign each student their preferred sections. If a section is full by the time your registration form is processed, you will be registered in the next available section. Returning your form on time will maximize your chances of getting into your preferred sections.
In order to register, students can choose among the following registration options as your registration form will be processed manually:
- your form can be faxed at 613-562-5869 or
- your form can be scanned and sent to the following email address clawacad@uottawa.ca
We will not be confirming the reception of faxes and emails, make sure to keep a confirmation receipt for yourself. When you will be registered, you will be able to print your personalized course and exam timetable from your uoZone account.
Students who will omit to send their registration form by Friday, August 19th will be treated as having decided not to attend the University of Ottawa. Your admission will therefore be cancelled.
REGISTRATION PROCESS
Step 1 - The Registration Form
You will need to print a copy of the First Year Registration Form.
Please indicate your name and student number on the form. Please note that you should also take a few minutes to review the personal information (addresses, phone numbers, etc.) currently in the University’s central database to make sure it is current. You can do this through uoZone and update this information at any time (when you move, etc.).
STEP 2 – Review the course descriptions
Please click here to see the course descriptions.
During your first year of law, all your courses are compulsory. You must therefore register in a section of each of the following courses this year:
CML1101 - Principles of Legal Research (section to be assigned by the Academic Affairs Office)
CML1102 - Contracts
CML1103 or CML1203 - Criminal Law & Procedure
CML1104 - Public Law and Legislation
CML1105 - You will be adding a Thematic course (elective) during the Winter Term. However, registration for first-year thematic courses will take place in January. You do not need to indicate a thematic course on your registration form at this time.
CML1106 - Alternate Dispute Resolution
CML1107 or CML1207 – Torts
CML1108 - Property
CML1213 - Constitutional Law I
Even though the curriculum is mandatory, there are a number of sections to choose from for each course. Each professor brings a different perspective to the course and some might be of greater interest to you than others. You therefore get to indicate your preferred section for each course.
Please note that the Faculty might have to make modifications to your timetable over the summer in order to ensure a balance in the size of each class. You should therefore wait to print your final timetable during the week prior to Orientation.
STEP 3 – Choosing a Small Group
Each student is assigned to one small group class (approximately 20 students per small group), in either Criminal Law and Procedure (CML1203 – 6 credits) OR Torts (CML1207 – 6 credits). Your small group professor will also be responsible for initiating you to legal research and legal writing. You must therefore begin by choosing your preferred small group topic and you preferred section in that course. Once you have done so, indicate your preference on the Registration Form. For each course, please indicate the course code as well as the letter indicating your preferred section.
STEP 4 – Corresponding Large Group
Once you have selected either Torts or Criminal Law and Procedure as your small group, you must pick a section in the other course, but in the lecture format. For example, if you have decided on a Torts class for your small group, you must register in one of the large groups of Criminal Law (and conversely, of course). Therefore, indicate your preferred section (in either CML1103 or CML1107) for this course.
To be clear, you should be registering in one of these two combinations:
CML 1203 with CML 1107
OR
CML 1207 with CML 1103
STEP 5 – Other Courses
You must then indicate your preferred section for each of the other courses except for CML 1101 - Principles of Legal Research where a section has already been assigned according to your small group (CML 1207 or CML 1203)
- CML 1102 - Contracts (5 credits – full year course)
- CML 1104 - Legislation and Public Law (3 credits – Fall Term only)
- CML 1106 - Introduction to Alternative Dispute Resolution (3 credits – Fall and January Term (1.5 credits per term))
- CML 1108 - Property (5 credits – Fall and January)
- CML 1213 - Constitutional Law I (3 credits - Winter Term only)
PLEASE NOTE THAT, ALTHOUGH WE WILL ASSIGN AS MANY OF YOUR PREFERRED COURSES AS POSSIBLE TO YOU, BECAUSE OF TIMETABLING CONSTRAINTS, STUDENTS CANNOT MAKE CHANGES TO THEIR ASSIGNED SECTION IN FIRST YEAR.
STEP 6 – Returning Your Registration Form
Once you have completed the form following the steps above:
- your signed form can be faxed at 613-562-5869 or
- your signed form can be scanned and sent to the following email address clawacad@uottawa.ca
University policies require that registration documents be submitted in hard copy and include your signature. A regular e-mail cannot therefore be used at this stage.
STEP 7 – Choosing your Thematic Course
The selection of your Thematic Course (CML 1105) will take place in January 2011. You will be provided with instructions at that time.

Updating Personal Information
Please note that you should also take a few minutes to review the personal information (addresses, phone numbers, etc.) currently in the University’s central database to make sure it is current. You can do this through uoZone and update this information at any time.
Orientation
Classes begin with a compulsory orientation period. The Orientation timetable will be posted on our web site http://www.commonlaw.uottawa.ca under Current Students, Orientation 2011 in the near future.
Recommendation when buying your books
First year students should buy their books during orientation week. If you purchase any later than that, you will face long lines (waiting with upper years for their books) and risk your books being sold out.
Student Identification Card
All full-time and part-time students must have a student identification card. You can obtain one by visiting InfoService at 75 Laurier Ave. Student identification cards are required to write exams, borrow books from the University libraries, access the University’s Sports Services, and many other services.
E-Mail Address
Each University of Ottawa student has been assigned a University of Ottawa email account. If you do not know, or cannot remember your uOttawa e-mail address, visit uoZone under Tools. Please note that the Common Law Section sends messages to the student population via email to your University of Ottawa email address only. Therefore it will be important that you check your uOttawa email on a regular basis.
Timetable Changes
Go to our web site http://www.commonlaw.uottawa.ca under “Course changes ” located under Student's Corner in order to view timetable modifications made to any course before returning on Campus as well as class cancellations, room changes, make-up classes and other important information. These are updated constantly and should be checked regularly.
