Continuing Education and Special Students

Courses offered by the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law are generally reserved for students registered in one of the school's programs.

The Faculty does, however, allow lawyers who are members of the bar of a Canadian province or territory, to apply to take 2nd or 3rd-year courses in order to expand their knowledge in specific areas of the law. In order to find out more about our course offerings, the Course Selection Guide is available on-line under Academic Affairs. Please make sure to look at the course offerings in both English and French.

If you are a lawyer and are interested in taking a course as a special student, please send a letter outlining your reasons for applying to the school, as well as the course or courses you would like to take, along with an up-to-date résumé to:

Applications must be submitted no later than the first day of classes of any academic term. Candidates are assessed on their experience. Admission also depends on the number of spaces available in the course or courses selected. Registration must be done in person at the law school before the end of the Course Change Period for the relevant academic term (consult the Course Selection Guide for exact dates).

A lawyer admitted as a special student can choose to take a course as an auditor or as a student (for credit). Tuition Fees are higher if you wish to obtain academic credits for the course because the instructor will have to correct assignments and exams and give the student a grade. An auditor can attend lectures but cannot hand in assignments or write examinations. Please note that credits obtained as a special student cannot be subsequently counted to a program of study in law.

Persons wishing to complete their NCA requirements cannot take courses as Special Students.  They must apply for admission to the Faculty under the NCA category.
