In the early 1970s, the decision was made to create a National Program for the Common Law Section, allowing people with a background in civil law to acquire additional training in common law.  To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Program, a celebration will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2012 as part of Common Law’s Homecoming festivities at the Fairmont Chateau Laurier.  The program will start at 3:00 p.m. with a panel consisting of four graduates who will participate in a debate on a serious subject, treated in a rather light and playful way:  "The democratic legitimacy of civil law vs. governance by judges."

Subsequently, National Program graduate Jamie Furniss (LL.B. 2005) will give a speech.  Even amongst alumni of the National Program, Jamie Furniss has carved a unique and extraordinary path (champion debater, clerk at the Supreme Court, Rhodes Scholar, volunteer worker in the wake of the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean).  No doubt his speech will be exciting!

The speech will be followed by a reception and those who wish can later attend the Alumni Gala held annually by the Common Law Section in the Adam Room.

We are forgoing speeches this year to give classmates more time to socialize with one another, dance to the music of Professor Ed Ratushny and The Wave, and celebrate their reunions.  We will also say a brief word of congratulations to our new inductees to the Common Law Honour Society.

We will celebrate milestone reunion years for graduating classes whose years end in '2 or '7, however all Common Law graduates are invited to attend.
