Gordon DuVal is a lawyer and ethicist who has spent the past 15 years researching and teaching health law, research ethics and medical ethics as a member of the Faculties of Law and Medicine at the University of Toronto, at its Joint Centre for Bioethics, at the US National Institutes of Health and at the American University Washington College of Law in Washington, DC. He was also a fellow at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago.
He graduated from the University of Calgary with a Masters degree in Philosophy (ethics) and from the University of Toronto with JD and SJD (Doctorate of Law) degrees with a specialty in health law and medical ethics.
As a researcher in bioethics and research ethics, Gordon DuVal has published on medical and research ethics in a variety of peer-reviewed medical, law, and bioethics journals, including the Archives of Internal Medicine, the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, the Journal of Medical Ethics, and the Ottawa Law Review.
He has also served on a number of expert panels as an adviser on ethics and research ethics, including:
- National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIH) Data and Safety Monitoring Board and Clinical Trials Network Protocol Review Committee.
- National Council on Ethics in Human Research (Canada)
- CIHR Institute for Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction Advisory Board
- National Cancer Institute (NIH) IRB
He has also been interviewed for television, newspaper and magazine articles discussing a variety of issues relating to biomedical ethics.
