Jeffrey Johnston
Part-time Professor
Professor Johnston is Senior Counsel with the Criminal Law Section of the Litigation Branch of the Department of Justice Canada. He holds a Bachelor of Laws degree (LL.B.) from the University of Victoria and a Master’s degree in International Human Right Law (M.St. (Dist)) from the University of Oxford. Professor Johnston clerked with the Court of Appeal for Ontario. He is admitted to the bars of Ontario and British Columbia and has appeared as counsel on criminal and constitutional cases before all levels of court in Ontario and British Columbia as well as in the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada. In addition to his current position, since joining the Department of Justice in 2001, Professor Johnston has worked as a Federal prosecutor with the Federal Prosecution Service (now the Public Prosecution Service of Canada) and as counsel with the International Assistance and Criminal Law Group prosecuting extradition and mutual legal assistance cases. Professor Johnston has also defended constitutional challenges to Federal legislation. Professor Johnston regularly appears as counsel for the Attorney General of Canada in the Supreme Court of Canada.
