Professor Álvarez is a professor of law at the University of Puerto Rico, where he has taught since 1981. He was a visiting professor at Rutgers-Camden in 1987 and at the University of Ottawa School of Law during the January terms of 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2010. He teaches Constitutional Law, Torts, Comparative Law, Freedom of Expression and a course on U.S. Federal Courts, among other subjects. Professor Alvarez is a member of the Puerto Rico Bar and of the Puerto Rican Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation. He has authored many articles in Spanish and English in Puerto Rican, U.S. and foreign law reviews and is the author of Puerto Rico, in Constitutions of Dependencies and Special Sovereignties (Blaustein, ed.), 2d ed. 1991; La Responsabilidad Civil Extracontractual en Puerto Rico – Casos y Materiales (2005); Derecho Constitucional de Puerto Rico y Relaciones Constitucionales con los Estados Unidos – Casos y Materiales (2009); Las Libertades de Expresión y Prensa en Puerto Rico – Casos y Materiales (2009).
