Mark C. Power is a leader in language rights, education law and public law. His research focuses on the rights of national minorities, Canadian, Indian and comparative constitutional law, federalism, access to justice and language rights.
Professor Power is regularly asked to comment on Canadian legal news and events, by national, regional and local media in English, as well as in French.
Professor Power joined the faculty of the French Common Law Program of the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law in 2009. Prior to that, he had clerked in 2002-2003 for the Honourable Judge Michel Bastarache, C.C. at the Supreme Court of Canada and lectured at the University of Moncton’s Faculty of Law. He began to practice the legal profession in 2003 at the Toronto office of the law firm Heenan Blaikie LLP, after having worked there as a summer student in 2001. He later moved to the firm’s Ottawa office.. He is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada (2003), the Law Society of New-Brunswick (2009), and the Law Society of British Columbia (2010).
Professor Power earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Ottawa (specialisation in economics and concentration in political science), as well as a Master of Arts in International Affairs (specialising in International Development) from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs of Carleton University. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (Common Law) from the French Common Law Program of the Common Law section of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa. He is currently completing a doctorate at Cambridge University.
Professor Power is always interested and prepared to discuss with students who are pursuing graduate level studies or students who wish to pursue such studies.
Faculty involvement
Professor Power enjoys advising and mentoring students considering furthering their legal studies or seeking summer employment in the legal field, publishing articles, or pursuing clerkships with the Supreme Court of Canada or other courts. His past students now practice law throughout Canada, and beyond its borders.
Mark Power participates in several committees of the Common Law Section:
- In 2009-2010, he co-presided over the Orientation committee and was a member of the Equity Committee
Community Activities
Mark C. Power is an active member of the Association des juristes d’expression française de l’Ontario (“AJEFO”) since 2002. He is a member of the administrative council of the AJEFO since 2010. He is also a member of the Association des juristes d’expression française du Nouveau-Brunswick, the Association des juristes d’expression française du Manitoba, and the Association des juristes d’expression française de l’Alberta.
Since 2009, he has been a member of the administrative council of the Centre for Legal Translation and Documentation at the University of Ottawa and the AJEFO.
Professor Power has been a member of the administrative council of the Francophone Legal Clinic of the Centre francophone de Toronto, the Centres d’Accueil Héritage, and the Ontario Bar Association’s Official Languages Committee.
