Common Law Welcomes Prospective Students to Open House 2012
The Common Law Section welcomed nearly 150 prospective English Program students and their guests to the annual Open House event on Saturday, March 3, 2012, offering visitors the chance to learn about the unique qualities of the law school from faculty and current students.
Prospective students were welcomed with speeches from Dean Bruce Feldthusen, Vice-Dean Craig Forcese, and Common Law Student Society President Shaun Jaberolansar, followed by the chance to attend one of two sample lectures given by select faculty members. Professor Jane Bailey presented a lecture entitled “Will the Real Digital Girl Please Stand Up?”, and Professor John Currie gave a presentation entitled “Curbing Aggression at the International Criminal Court.”

During lunch, alumnus Derek Smith (’01), a lawyer with TD Bank Financial Group, spoke about choosing a law school and mentioned some of the advantages of studying in the Nation’s Capital, both at the professional and social levels. He was followed by Emeritus Professor and judge of the Ontario Court of Justice, the Honourable David Paciocco, who spoke about the prestige and responsibility that accompanies a career in law. Justice Paciocco emphasized the significant changes the law school has undergone since he first started working as a professor in the early 1980s, noting that the current breadth of study options available at the Common Law Section is virtually unparalleled at any other law school in Canada. He also asserted that no matter which path prospective students ultimately choose to follow, a law degree and the experience earned while obtaining it are the perfect complements to any future career.

The day ended with several tours of Fauteux Hall conducted by current student ambassadors. Throughout the day, faculty members, student ambassadors and staff members were on hand to answer any and all questions from prospective students and their guests.
The Common Law Section looks forward to welcoming many of these visitors to the law school as new students next fall.
