Prof. Teresa Scassa Named Canada Research Chair in Information Law

On November 29, 2007, The Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Program, announced an investment of $109.7 million to fund appointments to, and renewals of, 109 Canada Research Chairs across the country.

Prof. Teresa Scassa has been named the Canada Research Chair in Information Law at uOttawa. Her work will help replace information laws with clearer, fairer legislation. This research will guide and assist governments, consumers and businesses with current issues raised by major technological and cultural changes.

“Dr. Scassa is our third Canada Research Chair in the Law and Technology group.  She joins Dr. Ian Kerr, Canada Research Chair in Ethics, Law & Technology, and Dr. Michael Geist, Canada Research Chair of Internet & E-commerce Law, confirming that uOttawa’s Law and Technology program is the leader in the country,” states Dr. Daniel Gervais, Acting Dean of the Common Law Section.

A fluently bilingual scholar whose work is recognized worldwide, Prof. Scassa joined  the Faculty of Law in July 2007.   Prior to this, she taught for 15 years at Dalhousie Law School.  This year she teaches Introduction à la propriété intellectuelle et industrielle for the uOttawa French Common Law program.  Her main areas of research are in intellectual property law and privacy, as well as in the emerging hybrid area of “information law.”  Prof. Scassa is also co-editor of the Canadian Journal of Law and Technology

In 2000, the Government of Canada established the CRC Program to create 2000 new research professorships in universities across the country by 2008.  The CRC Program invests $300 million per year to attract and retain the world’s most prestigious and promising minds.

Dean Gervais and the Common Law Section congratulate Prof. Scassa on this occasion.
