Alumna Valerie Hughes (’79) Appointed Director, Legal Affairs, WTO Secretariat
Common Law alumna Valerie Hughes (’79) has been appointed as Director, Legal Affairs Division of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Secretariat in Geneva.Previously, Ms. Hughes was Assistant Deputy Minister and Counsel, Law Branch, Department of Finance Canada. She also held the positions of Director, Appellate Body Secretariat, WTO and past-President of the Canadian Council on International Law. Ms. Hughes has been a partner with Gowlings LLP and Ogilvy Renault LLP, and has held senior executive positions in international law and international trade law in Justice Canada, Finance Canada and Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada.
