Canadian Association for Refugee and Forced Migration Studies Annual Conference

The Canadian Association for Refugee and Forced Migration Studies (CARFMS) will hold its second annual conference at the Faculty of Law from June 1 – 2, 2009.

Bringing together academics, activists, NGOs, policy makers, government representatives as well as forced migrants, the CARFMS conference will feature a series of interdisciplinary dialogues in order to explore, debate and understand the varied aspects of forced migration.  Conference themes include:

  •  Forced Migration, Global Politics, and the International Arena
  • Settlement, Security and Social Justice
  •  Interdisciplinary Approaches to Forced Migration Research

Showler_web.JPGProfessor Peter Showler, Director of the Refugee Forum at uOttawa’s Human Rights Research and Education Centre, will present the keynote address entitled, “Imperfect Storm Warnings” on June 1 at 9:30 a.m. in the Gowlings Moot Court Room(FTX 147).  Prof. Showler is also a former Chairperson of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada (1999-2002).

On June 2, Mr. Abraham Abraham, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Representative in Canada, will present, "Mixed Migration, Global Politics and the International Arena" at 9:00 a.m. in FTX 147.

Other speakers include CARFMS president, Prof. Donald Galloway (University of Victoria, Faculty of Law); Prof. Catherine Dauvergne, Canada Research Chair in Migration Law (UBC, Faculty of Law); Prof. James Milner, Department of Political Science (Carleton University); Annette Sikka, Doctoral candidate (uOttawa, Faculty of Law); and Prof. Janet Cleveland from the Centre d’études et de recherches internationales (University of Montreal).
