New LL.M. with Concentration in International Trade and Foreign Investment Law

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce its new LL.M. with Concentration in International Trade and Foreign Investment Law and is now accepting applications for September 2010 admission.

This new program is designed to ensure that students acquire a fundamental understanding of international trade and investment law, with emphasis on systemic and critical thinking in international economic law matters as well as the development of strong research skills.

Professor Céline Lévesque, who participated in the program’s design and who acted as Scholar-in-Residence at the Trade Law Bureau of the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (2008-2009), is convinced that the program will serve students well:  “Having witnessed the challenges faced by practitioners of international investment law for the past two years, I am confident this LL.M. will become a mark of competence in the field.”  Further, she adds, “The research and advanced studies characteristics of the program will also provide a depth of knowledge and skills useful in many settings.”

The Faculty of Law boasts extensive expertise in the field of international trade and investment law.  As many as ten of its professors are specialists on these matters and many others share interests that are related, for example, through the lens of environmental law, intellectual property rights, or human rights. Students enrolled in the program will have the opportunity to work under the guidance of these faculty members on critical global issues and important legal questions. Professor Don McRae, a member of the United Nations International Law Commission, a WTO and NAFTA panelist and an arbitrator in investor-State disputes, says of the new program, “The concentration will bring to bear the considerable expertise in this faculty in the fields of international trade and investment law and allow students to enrich their studies significantly.  We are uniquely placed as one of the few law schools in North America that can offer a program of this kind.”
