Professor Jeremy de Beer Launches "Implementing the Development Agenda" in Geneva

Professor Jeremy de Beer, editor of Implementing the Development Agenda, spoke at the launch of the new book at an event in Geneva on July 10, 2009, co-hosted by the Emerging Dynamic Global Economies (EDGE) Network and Geneva-based think tank IQsensato.

debeer_bookweb.jpgThe book focuses on the implementation of a potentially revolutionary Development Agenda by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) that could greatly affect critical international issues of intellectual property and public policy.

A panel of academics at the book’s launch hailed the new agreement for its potential to bring about positive changes to the international intellectual property system, but warned that the agenda’s promise is entirely dependent on how the ideas are implemented into real practice.  The panel debated different methods of implementation, expressing the diverse array of views found in the new book.debeer_web.jpg

“All of the pieces are in place for meaningful changes to occur,” said Prof. de Beer.  He warned, however, that if WIPO cannot effectively orchestrate the project’s implementation, it risks not only negatively affecting international IP matters, but also marginalizing the organization itself.
