uOttawa Places Second in International Final of ELSA WTO Moot Competition
The Faculty of Law’s team of Susanna Kam, Mariella Montplaisir, Jonathan O’Hara and Tavengwa Runyowa came in a very close second in the Final International Round of the European Law Students’ Association (ELSA) World Trade Organization Moot Competition in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, held from May 24-30, 2010.
16 teams from all over the world progressed to this final round, with uOttawa and Duke University having claimed the only North American spots in a hard-fought regional round that took place at Fauteux Hall on March 18-20, 2010. uOttawa defeated the top-ranked defending champions from the University of Melbourne in the Semi-Finals, but narrowly lost in a split decision in the Final Round to a team from the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, in India. Susanna won the award for Best Oralist in the Semi-Finals.
This is uOttawa’s best ever result in this competition, capping of a wonderful year of successes for moot teams from the law school.
Susanna Kam and Tavengwa Runyowa are both third-year students in the English Common Law Program; Jonathan O’Hara is a second-year Common Law student; and Mariella Montplaisir is a third-year student in the Civil Law Section. The team was coached by Rambod Behboodi, General Counsel and Executive Director, Law Branch, Finance Canada.
Congratulations to the team members and their coach!
