Upcoming Conference: Feminist Perspectives on International Human Rights in Canada
On the weekend of March 27-29, 2009, the Faculty of Law will host a conference entitled “Feminist Perspectives on International Human Rights in Canada,” marking the importance of international human rights law in the support and affirmation of women’s rights in Canada.
The conference will address numerous aspects of implementation, compliance and follow-up mechanisms related to human rights law, focusing specifically on topics such as globalization, sustainable development, employment equity, aboriginal women’s issues, violence against women and racial discrimination, among many others.
Organized by Professor Lucie Lamarche, the Gordon F. Henderson Chair in Human Rights, the conference is also sponsored by the Faculty of Law, the Human Rights Research and Education Centre, the University of Ottawa Institute of Women’s Studies and other partners.
Prof. Lamarche’s career includes ongoing research, teaching and publishing in the fields of human rights, social and labour law, international law and feminist studies. Her major preoccupation surrounds the implementation of economic and social human rights, and her academic work has been complemented by work with the United Nations, UNESCO, the Law Commission of Canada, Status of Women Canada, the Canadian Bar Association and Conseil du statut de la femme du Québec.
