Prof. Mendes Authors New Book on International Criminal Court
Professor Errol Mendes has authored a new book entitled Peace and Justice at the International Criminal Court: A Court of Last Resort (Edward Elgar Publishing), which addresses the broad challenge of integrating justice and peace in conflict zones around the world.
Prof. Mendes analyzes the history of the International Criminal Court since its establishment in 1998, examining how it seeks to reconcile the demand for justice for the most serious crimes known to humanity with the promotion of sustainable peace in conflict areas around the world. Specifically, the book focuses on two noteworthy prosecutions involving indictments of the president and other senior officials of Sudan and a savage rebel group in Northern Uganda. Prof. Mendes looks at how the Court can overcome some of the key obstacles that threaten its work in the future.
The book is informed by Prof. Mendes' year as a Visiting Professional with the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, an experience that gave him unique insight into situations involving Darfur, Palestine and Uganda.
