Option Requirements

*N.B. You must be registered in the J.D. program in order to qualify.  Please complete the International Law Option Form (see link on previous page) and submit it to Prof. Penelope Simons for review and approval.  

Any registered J.D. student may take a course listed as a International Law Option course. However, J.D. students who wish to receive formal recognition for having completed the International Law Option, which consists of a notation on their transcript, must complete the following requirements:

a.) complete a compulsory course (3 credits); and

b.) complete optional courses (15 credits) chosen from among  courses in either the English Common Law Section or the French Common Law Section; and

c.) complete a major paper in an approved International Law Option course or an approved International Law Option directed research course. If completed as part of an approved International Law Option course, the paper must be worth at least 50% of the final grade for the course. A major paper completed through a Directed Research course must be on a topic approved by the International Law Option Co-ordinator (internat@uottawa.ca), and be assigned the code CML 3251 (4 credits) or CML 3351 (3 credits).

d.) obtain a minimum overall average of 6.0 in the International Law Option courses.

As well, students may choose to participate in a moot in an area related to International Law. The following is a list of moot competitions in the area of International Law:

What do I do if a course I have taken/want to take is not listed?

Ask the instructor of the course to contact a co-ordinator of the International Law Option. The co-ordinator will review the course syllabus and decide if the course meets the criteria for a International Law course.
