On April 17-18 at the University of Ottawa, the Assocation of Canadian Studies organized a conference titled "Checking Our Constitution at 30: The Influence of the Canadian Constitution and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms on Legislation, Identities and Federalism."

April 17th

    • The opening remarks were provided by Pascale Fournier (Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa), Jack Jedwab (Executive Director, Association for Canadian Studies) and Peter Oliver (Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa).
    • The first panel of the day, "The Constitution, Constitutional Reform and Federalism in Canada," featured Bruce Ryder (Osgoode Hall Law School), Warren Newman (senior general counsel, Department of Justice Canada), Peter Oliver (University of Ottawa), Graham Fox (President, Institute for Research on Public Policy) and interim Liberal leader Bob Rae.

    • The second panel of the day of April 17, "Crimes of Honour, Canadian Values & Regard for the Law," featured Patrick Healy (Court of Quebec Criminal and Penal Division), Shahrzad Mojab (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, expert witness at the Shafia trial), Margarida Garcia (University of Ottawa), Pascale Fournier (University of Ottawa), Pascal McDougall, (University of Ottawa) and Aurore Schwab (University of Geneva, Switzerland).

April 18th

    • The first panel of the day on April 18, "Legacies and Implications of Human Rights Law in Canada," featured Dominique Clement (University of Alberta), Max Yalden (former Chief Commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission) and Ken Norman (University of Saskatchewan, Faculty of Law and former Chair of the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission).

    • The third panel of the day on April 18, "Transnational Comparisons: Lessons and Understanding between the Canadian Experience and that of other Countries," featured Bruce Ryder (Osgoode Hall Law School – York University), Lorraine Weinrib (University of Toronto), Vrinda Narain (McGill University) and Stephen Tierney (University of Edinburgh School of Law).

    • The final panel of the day on April 18, "Taking Stock and Where do we go from Here?" featured the Honourable Michel Bastarache (Supreme Court Justice), the Honourable Irwin Cotler (MP for Mount Royal, former Minister of Justice & Attorney General of Canada), The Honourable Jean Augustine (Fairness Commissioner of Ontario, Former Liberal MP), and Graham Fraser (Commissioner of official Languages for Canada).
