Professor Cameron Awarded BLG Research Fellowship

Professor Angela Cameron has been awarded $12,000 for the Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG) Research Fellowship for her project entitled, “Discrimination against queer students in Canadian public schools: the challenges of administrative law in the pursuit of substantive equality.”

With the help of a first-year student assistant, Prof. Cameron will examine legally protected ways in which queer students, queer parents and teachers, and queer-friendly teachers and parents can influence public school curriculum in ways that support and nurture the human rights of queer youth.  The research assistant will help in the gathering and analysing of recent Canadian empirical data on queer students committing or attempting to commit suicide, and rates of bullying among queer students. The research assistant will also trace the trajectory of the failed 2009 Ontario education reform legislation.

The BLG Research Fellowship program was established in February 2004 to support legal research in Canada.  The fellowship program allows a professor and a student assistant the opportunity to pursue exciting research projects.
