The Inaugural Social Justice Soccer Cup Nets Great Success
On October 21st, a total of 65 students, professors and practitioners came together to battle for the coveted Social Justice Soccer Cup (which was purchased second hand no less). All participants met on the Sports Complex Field undeterred by the afternoon’s cold and drizzly conditions, and soon learned that even those passionate about social justice have a sizeable competitive flair.
The first round saw Layton’s Legends --under the guidance of captain/coach/ cheerleader/Professor Suzanne Bouclin-- emerge as an early favourite, with an impressive first round victory over Desmond’s Dynamos.
The story of the second round was McClung’s Monsters -- captained by goal keeper/Professor David Wiseman -- as they won their second straight game, care of a shootout.
The third round saw the two favoured titans clash, and after a back-and-forth of epic proportions, McClung’s Monsters were victorious over the passionate Legends.
Then, in round four, McClung’s Monsters then won the Social Justice Cup with the drama level high, sealing an unbeaten record in another shootout win.
All participants – with a special nod to the professors, staff and practitioners - displayed spectacular (or perhaps surprising is more accurate) athleticism and supreme teamwork throughout the course of the afternoon. The Social Justice Caucus would like to thank those who organized and participated in the event. The afternoon proved to be a wonderful networking and community-building opportunity for those interested in social justice.
With such a successful beginning, the Social Justice Cup has surely cemented itself as fixture on the Faculty of Common Law’s calendar for years to come.
