Stephen Hazell is the founding partner of Ecovision Law and associate counsel with Ecojustice. He teaches environmental assessment law.
Stephen served as executive director of several national environmental groups including Sierra Club Canada and Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society leading successful campaigns creating and expanding several national parks, protecting boreal forest, and opposing environmentally harmful developments such as the Mackenzie Gas Project, the White’s Point Basalt Quarry and Marine Terminal, Great Whale Hydroelectric Project, and the Kiggavik Uranium Mine. He initiated precedent-setting law suits against the Rafferty-Alameda dams in southern Saskatchewan and the Cheviot open-pit coal mine near Jasper Alberta.
Stephen was a key advocate for the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, later joining the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency to lead the team that developed the regulations for that statute. Stephen has consulted with various Canadian governments, as well as the governments of Jamaica, Zimbabwe, Slovakia and Costa Rica on a host of environmental law, policy and management issues. He has written numerous scholarly articles, as well as Canada v. The Environment, his 1999 book on federal environmental assessment law and policy.
