Information:

Steven Garland is a partner in Smart & Biggar’s Ottawa office. His practice focuses primarily on intellectual property litigation of all types including issues relating to patent, trade-mark, copyright, industrial designs, trade secrets and competition law. He has acted on many patent litigation matters that have involved a wide variety of subjects, including pharmaceutical, chemical, biochemical, biotechnological, telephony, mechanical and industrial subject matters. Mr. Garland has appeared as counsel in intellectual property cases, in the Federal Court of Canada and Federal Court of Appeal, in the Ontario Superior Court and Court of Appeal, and before the Supreme Court of Canada. He also regularly appears before the Patent Appeal Board and the Trade-marks Opposition Board. He has also been retained as a mediator in intellectual property disputes.

Mr. Garland received his law degree from the University of Ottawa in 1990, graduating magna cum laude and was also an editor of the Ottawa Law Review. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 1992. He is a registered trademark agent (1992), a registered patent agent (1993) and a licensed professional engineer (P.Eng.) for the province of Ontario. Mr. Garland has a Bachelor of Engineering degree (1985) from the University of Western Ontario with an emphasis in chemical and biochemical engineering.

Mr. Garland is Past-President and Fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) and President of the Canadian Executive Council for the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI). He is also a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), the Advocates Society (Ontario), and the editorial board of Intellectual Property Magazine (formerly Patent World).
