Call for Proposals: Aboriginal Women & the Law Summer Institute 2006

The Claire L’Heureux-Dubé Fund for Social Justice was created in honour of Claire L’Heureux-Dubé, retired justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. It was designed to recognize the enormous contribution Madam Justice L’Heureux-Dubé has made to the administration of justice in Canada, and to pay homage to her efforts to advance the ideal s of equality and social justice. Throughout her distinguished career, Madam Justice L’Heureux-Dubé has paid particular attention to the impact of law upon women, children, persons with disabilities, racialized peoples, poor people, Aboriginal peoples, and persons with diverse sexual orientation. The Fund, which is administered by the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa, helps to finance projects that carry forward the ideals that motivated Madam Justice L’Heureux-Dubé’s work.

The Fund has supported two Summer Feminist Institutes. The first was held near Kingston, Ontario in 2004, and brought together Ontario lawyers, law professors, law students and media experts to examine feminism and the media. The second will take place in Nunavik, Quebec, in 2005, and will bring together women with legal expertise from southern Quebec and Inuit women from Nunavik to examine issues affecting women in the north.

The Fund will finance a third Summer Feminist Institute in 2006, to take place in western Canada, with a focus on Aboriginal women and the law.

We are seeking proposals for this third Summer Feminist Institute for 2006. The location for the Institute must be in western Canada (Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, the Yukon, Northwest Territories, Nunavut.) The Institute should take place in the summer of 2006. The budget should total no more than $40,000. Projects will be evaluated by the Board of Directors for the Fund on the extent to which they would help to further the egalitarian objectives that underlie Madam Justice L’Heureux-Dubé’s important work.

Proposals should be sent before 31 August 2005 to:
