Professor de Beer joined the Faculty of Law in 2004. Before entering academia he practiced law with the Department of Justice as legal counsel to the Copyright Board of Canada. Professor de Beer was also the law clerk to Justice Allen Linden at the Federal Court of Appeal, and before that worked at the  firm of Macleod Dixon LLP in Calgary, Alberta.

His research and recent publications address topics ranging from digital copyrights to biotechnology patents, with particular emphasis on the intersection of technology, intellectual property and international development. Other interests include administrative law and litigation relating to intellectual property.

Professor de Beer teaches an introductory course on Property Law, which covers contemporary and engaging issues in real, personal and intellectual property, and Digital Music Law, a multi-disciplinary and multi-national seminar covering legal, technological, cultural and commercial developments in the global music industry. He also teaches a seminar on Global Intellectual Property Policy and Social Justice, which focuses the relationships among international IP regimes and trade, development, the environment and human rights
