We are delighted to welcome you to your law school.   You may call upon us for questions regarding timetabling, exams, registration, courses, in fact any question relating to academic affairs.

REGISTRATION OVERVIEWf

During your first year of law, all your courses are compulsory.  You must therefore register in a section of each of the following courses this year:

  • Torts
  • Criminal Law & Procedure
  • Public Law and Legislation
  • Contracts
  • Property
  • Alternate Dispute Resolution
  • Constitutional Law I
  • You will be adding a Thematic (elective) Course during the Winter Term.  However, registration for first-year thematic courses will take place in January.  Do not indicate a thematic course on your registration form at this time.

Even though the curriculum is mandatory, there are a number of sections to choose from for each course.  Each professor brings a different perspective to the course and some might be of greater interest to you than others.  You therefore get to indicate your preferred section for each course.

We will do everything we can to provide you with as many of your preferred sections as possible. However, if a section is full by the time we process your registration, another section will be assigned to you.  Once you are registered, you will be able to print your individual timetable from the web by visiting the InfoWeb site at http://www.infoweb.uottawa.ca/.  Please note that the School might have to make modifications to your timetable over the summer in order to ensure a balance in the size of each class.  You should therefore wait to print your final timetable during the week prior to Orientation.

REGISTRATION DEADLINES

We will begin registration of first-year students on Monday, July 13th.  In order to have the greatest chances of obtaining your preferred course sections, please ensure that your completed registration forms reaches our office by 8:30 a.m. on July 13th.  All forms received by that time will be registered in random order.

Registration forms received after 8:30 a.m. on July 13th will be processed in the order they are received.  It is therefore to your advantage to finalize your registration as soon as possible as the longer you wait, the least likely you are to get into your preferred classes.

Any student who has not registered by Friday, August 21st will be treated as having decided not to attend the University of Ottawa.  Your admission will therefore be cancelled.

REGISTRATION PROCESS

STEP 1 – The Registration Form

To register, begin by printing a copy of the Registration Form from the school web site:
http://www.registrar.uottawa.ca/Portals/43/Registrar/REGI3144.pdf

Please indicate your name and student number on the form.  Please note that you should also take a few minutes to review the personal information (addresses, phone numbers, etc.) currently in the University’s central database to make sure it is current.  You can do this through InfoWeb and update this information at any time (when you move, etc.).

STEP 2 – Choosing a Small Group

Each student is assigned to one small group class (approximately 20 students per small group), in either Criminal Law and Procedure (CML1203 – 6 credits) OR Torts (CML1207 – 6 credits).  Your small group professor will also be responsible for initiating you to legal research and legal writing.  You must therefore begin by choosing your preferred small group topic and you preferred section in that course.  Once you have done so, indicate your preference on the Registration Form.  For each course, please indicate the course code as well as the letter indicating your preferred section.

STEP 3 – Corresponding Large Group

Once you have selected either Torts or Criminal Law and Procedure as your small group, you must pick a section in the other course, but in the lecture format.  For example, if you have decided on a Torts class for your small group, you must register in one of the large groups of Criminal Law (and conversely, of course).  Therefore, indicate your preferred section (in either CML1103 or CML1107) for this course.

To be clear, you should be registering in one of these two combinations:

CML 1203 with CML 1107 or
CML 1207 with CML 1103.

STEP 4 – Other Courses

You must then indicate your preferred section for each of the other courses:

  • CML 1101 - Principles of Legal Research (1 credit – Fall Term only)
  • CML 1102 - Contracts (5 credits – full year course)
  • CML 1104 - Legislation and Public Law (3 credits – Fall Term only)
  • CML 1106 - Introduction to Alternative Dispute Resolution (3 credits – Fall and January Term (1.5 credits per term))
  • CML 1108 - Property (5 credits – Fall and January)
  • CML 1213 - Constitutional Law I (3 credits - Winter Term only)

PLEASE NOTE THAT, ALTHOUGH WE WILL ASSIGN AS MANY OF YOUR PREFERRED COURSES AS POSSIBLE TO YOU, BECAUSE OF TIMETABLING CONSTRAINTS, STUDENTS CANNOT MAKE CHANGES TO THEIR ASSIGNED SECTION IN FIRST YEAR.

STEP 5 – Returning Your Registration Form

Once you have completed the form following the steps above, sign the form and return it to us by fax to 613-562-5869.

University policies require that registration documents be submitted in hard copy and include your signature.  A regular e-mail cannot therefore be used at this stage.

STEP 6 – Choosing your Thematic Course

The selection of your Thematic Course (CML 1105) will take place in January 2010.  You will be provided with instructions at that time.

Orientation - September 2 to 4
Classes begin with a compulsory orientation period from Wednesday, September 2 (at 8:00 a.m. sharp) to Friday September 4.  The Orientation timetable will be posted on our web site http://www.commonlaw.uottawa.ca/ under Current Students, Orientation 2009, in the near future.

Student Identification Card
All full-time and part-time students must have a student identification card.  You can obtain one by visiting InfoService at 75 Laurier Avenue.  Student identification cards are required to write exams, borrow books from the University libraries, access the University’s Sports Services, and many other services.

Financial Aid Bursary
We are pleased to announce financial aid scholarships for students entering Common Law.  Every full-time (12 credits) first time registrant to the University of Ottawa who has qualified for financial assistance from a Canadian provincial government will receive an automatic $1400 bursary from the University of Ottawa.  For further information, please call the Financial Aid Office at (613) 562-5734 or email finaid@uottawa.ca.

Tuition Fees

Did you know you can pay your student account through telephone banking or Internet banking services?  You do not need an invoice to pay by telephone or online.  Your statement of account on InfoWeb has all the information you need.

You may confirm your tuition amount on InfoWeb at http://www.infoweb.uottawa.ca/.  This site also contains details on how and when you are required to pay your fees.

Payment deadline

Change of Address
Students must inform the University of all changes to both permanent and mailing addresses. Correspondence will normally be forwarded to the student's mailing address during the school year (September to April), and to the permanent address during the summer. Students can change their address by visiting http://www.infoweb.uottawa.ca/.

E-Mail Address
Each University of Ottawa student has been assigned a University of Ottawa e-mail account.  If you do not know, or cannot remember your uOttawa e-mail address, visit http://www.infoweb.uottawa.ca/, under Services.  Under that heading, you will find information on computer and e-mail accounts.  Please note that the Common Law Section regularly sends messages to the student population via e-mail to your University of Ottawa e-mail address only.  Therefore it will be important that you check your uOttawa e-mail on a regular basis, or to set up your account in a way that your e-mails are forwarded to another account if you prefer.

Timetable Changes
From time to time, it is necessary to cancel classes, schedule make-up classes, or move a class to another classroom.  All such notices are posted 1) on the monitors in the lobby and the 3rd floor Atrium, and 2) on our web site at http://www.commonlaw.uottawa.ca/ under Course Changes.  Please make sure to check these notices on a regular basis (every day actually).  Other important messages will also posted on the monitors and on the web site.
