Upcoming Conference: Re-imagining Western Civilization - The Legacy of C.L.R. James
The Common Law Section will host an interdisciplinary conference on October 16 & 17, 2009, entitled “Re-imagining Western Civilization: On the 60th Anniversary of the writing of C.L.R. James’ American Civilzation.”
Noted C.L.R. James scholar David Austin will launch his new book You Don’t Play with Revolution: The Montreal Lectures of C.L.R. James, which features never-before-published lectures by James – a prominent Marxist theorist, anti-colonial scholar, and cultural critic – delivered in Montreal in the late 1960s on topics such as Rousseau, Shakespeare and Marx and Lenin, examined in the context of Caribbean history.
Other conference participants, including Selwyn Cudjoe, George Dei, Anthony Farley, Terisa Turner and Rinaldo Walcott, reflect the diversity of James’ work. They will examine topics ranging from James’ enormous impact upon African American intellectual thought, to his Marxist conception of modernity.
The conference will also feature a reception hosted by the law firm Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP.
The conference agenda and registration form can be obtained at www.commonlaw.uottawa.ca/james-registration.
